The Big 4-0!

ByLetham August 8, 2009

On August 8th, 1969, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr walked out of No. 3 Abbey Road, having set the foundation for what they all knew would be their last album.

Forty years ago, the four genre defining artists walked across the zebra striped street, and one of the most infamous album covers in music history was created.

Today, this photograph turns 40.

Over The Hill? I don't think so.

Initially, the album was going to be called Everest, but the group, as well as various other hands that contributed to the album, collectively decided that the thought of a Himalayan cover was not what anyone wanted.

Eventually, they decided they wanted to do something closer to home. Paul McCartney, then, sketched four stick figures crossing the zebra street, and the simple sketch was made into reality soon after.

Here’s the album opener for your listening pleasure.

The Beatles, Come Together

Happy Birthday, Abbey Road. I’ve got a 40 chilling on ice in tribute to you (as should everyone).
