Internet, You Work So Well

ByWinn January 14, 2009

Oh Internet, you’re so great when you work well.

It’s really fantastic.

A couple months ago, on a Pandora station I had tinkered with for a while, this song “My On-Call Nurse” by From Bubblegum to Sky came on. I had never heard of the track, or the band for that matter. But towards the end of the song there was a real infectious sample, I heard it somewhere before. Mariah? I think it was Mariah but, after hitting up wikipedia on the topic, the infinite wisdom informed me they were actually sampling “Genius of Love” from Tom Tom Club, which I found an animated video of on YouTube.

So this album, I couldn’t find it until last week, when I found a cheap copy on an eBay wholesaler’s store. For 5$ I acquired Nothing Sadder Than Lonely Queen. The transition, from user-adapted internet radio, to search-based video uploads, to internet music wholesalers is awesome.

And what else? Corporations are finally catching on how to use Facebook and it’s hilarious. Burger King’s Whopper Sacrifice is probably the best app/promotion I’ve seen for Fb. They’ve caused nearly a quarter million de-friendings. Only drawback? The coupon comes in the mail 4-6 weeks later. Simply dissapointing.

But what’s really the best part of this burgeoning nexus of info and commerce that I harness in my humble college apartment? Next door the kids got a little rambunctious and lit a trash can on fire. Who cares about technology, people will never stop being silly.

Oh and that Mariah Carey song, sampling Genius of Love? It’s “Fantasy.” Big ups to my sister for inundating my youth with outstanding female pop singers.
