There’s been an onslaught of new music comin from every which direction as of late. Usually I’d use this “What’s in the System” tag to promote older music that you can still bang to today, but with this rapid session of fresh new jams comin through the same system, I figured we can make an exception.
BK-One’s got the Jazz
Brother Ali’s DJ, BK-One, just put out an album a little bit ago entitled Radio Do Canibal and it’s ill as hell. Fresh jazz beats over a crazy variety of EmCees ranging from, the obvious and Rhymesayer labelmates, Brother Ali, Slug, and P.O.S., to Black Thought, Raekwon, and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. I’ve been bumpin this CD since I first laid ears on it and it hasn’t gotten old yet. Peep this track featuring the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. It has no EmCee on it, and it’s one of the baddest tracks on it.

Everyone’s Got Their Tribute

K-Salaam and Beatnik put out this tribute to older R&B songs that all of us have heard, and loved over the years. It’s called Never Can Say Goodbye (you can find it here for free) and it features The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye (just to name a few). This remix of Stevie Wonder’s Uptight is plain filthy.

Major Labels Break the Rapper

The DC rapper, Wale, has been a Not Drug favorite since his Mixtape About Nothing came out. Then Back to the Feature dropped and Wale was ontop, headlining tours, and he hadn’t even put out an actual album yet. Just recently, though, Attention Deficit hit stores and, even though, I do say I’m a fan…it’s just not as good. Some songs are pretty dope (i.e. Pretty Girls) but then you have someone like Gucci Mane guest on the track…and it’s like..”What the F’ homeboy, what are you tryin to do here.” And I mean, I know what he’s tryin to do, but I don’t like it. There are some standout tracks like “World Tour”, “Beautiful Bliss” , and “TV in the Radio” (with Somalia’s own K’Naan), but the mixtapes were just downright filthy. There is a iTunes only bonus track you can grab right here which I am a fan of, but all in all, it’s not too bad of an album. Give it a listen and judge for yourself.
Oh, and also:
That’s Black Thought instead of Gucci Mane on the Pretty Girls track. Better? I think so.
Dwb.
